MONTVILLE, NJ -- The Union Catholic Forensics Team had several great performances at a tournament at Montville High School this past weekend.

Goldera Surles and Matt Gomez, who just started working as a pair this year, finished first in Duo Interpretation, Audrey Davis and Caroline Bart placed fifth in Duo, and Colleen Falconer was fifth in Original Oratory.

Gomez and Surles were shocked at what they accomplished.

"I am very pleasantly surprised,'' said Gomez, who lives in Rahway. "This is our first year working together and Goldera is definitely rubbing off on me.''

"I was shocked and beyond ecstatic that we finished first,'' said Surles, who lives in Union. Everyone's jaws dropped on our team when they announced that we finished first. I was speechless. Matt and I have developed really good chemistry together and that showed.''

The fifth place finish by Bart and Davis continued their great start to the season. In their previous tournament they advanced to the semifinals at the prestigious Princeton Classic. This is the first-year that Bart, who lives in Metuchen, is a member of the Forensics team.

The UC Forensics team, under head coach Edward Sagendorf, will be back in action on January 20 in a tournament at Millburn High School.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.
