MEMPHIS, TN -- Jadeyn Williams, a freshman at Union Catholic, turned in an outstanding performance by earning a sixth-place medal and an “A’’ rating in the Cadet Women’s Saber competition at the Junior Olympic Fencing National Championships on Sunday at the Memphis Cook Convention Center in Memphis, Tennessee.

Williams, who was fencing for her club team (Advance Fencing & Fitness Academy in Garwood), was the youngest competitor in her 17-and-under age group to reach the podium, and she placed sixth out of 176 competitors. Her “A’’ rating is the highest possible rating in fencing.

Last month, Williams, who lives in Metuchen, represented Union Catholic when she scored a dramatic victory over Anika Tsapatsaris of Ridgewood to finish first in the Saber at the NJSIAA Independent Schools Qualifying Round.

With that victory, Williams, believed to be the first girl to ever represent Union Catholic at a fencing tournament, qualified for the NJSIAA Individual Fencing Championships on March 4 at Livingston High School.
