SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Police are still searching for the suspects who carjacked a vehicle in the parking lot of the Scotchwood Diner (1928 Route 22) in Scotch Plains around 12:30 a.m. today, according to a statement issued by the Scotch Plains police department..

Patrol units responded to a report of a carjacking at the diner and upon arrival met the victim, a 43-year-old male who described being approached in the parking lot by two white males who assaulted him. According to the police report, a third male entered the vehicle, a 2001 Toyota Camry, which the victim had been warming up in the lot.

The suspects who assaulted the victim reportedly ran to a tan colored vehicle that was parked on the property next door and fled the scene. Both vehicles headed onto Rt 22 East. A "Be on the Lookout" alert was issued to surrounding towns, and the victim's car was located on a short time later on Lawrence Avenue in Westfield. The Union County K-9 unit was brought in to try to track the suspect who apparently  fled on foot, but results were negative.

The victim suffered minor lacerations to his hands and face. The Scotch Plains Rescue Squad responded to treat the victim, who declined transportation to a hospital.
