BLOOMFIELD, NJ -- The Union Catholic volleyball team, ranked No. 6 in the state, turned in a very strong showing when the Vikings placed third at the very prestigious Bloomfield Tournament on Saturday.

The Vikings, competing in a loaded field that consisted of 24 teams, defeated Hunterdon Central, 25-21, 25-19 and Jackson Liberty, 25-13, 25-20, and split with Mount Olive, 25-21, 22-25, to win its division in pool play to advance to the Gold Bracket.
 
In the double elimination Gold Bracket, UC beat East Brunswick, 25-15, defeated No. 10 ranked Hudson Catholic, 25-20, lost to Williamstown 16-25, and then fell to No. 9 ranked Ridge in the semifinals, 22-25. Ridge went on to defeat Williamstown in the championship game.

Next up for the Vikings is an eagerly anticipated showdown with rival Westfield, ranked No. 11 in the state, on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Union Catholic. Westfield defeated UC, 29-27, 25-13 in the Union County Championship match last year.
