SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Najlaa Williams, who helped ignite the Union Catholic volleyball team to one of its best seasons ever last fall, has signed her National Letter of Intent to play at Virginia State University.
Williams, who established herself as one of the best libero players in the state last season, racked up an astounding 313 digs in 2019, including a total of 51 in the four games in the state tournament, en route to being named First Team All-Conference, Second Team All-State in Non-Public, and Third-Team overall All-State team.
With Williams as one of the key catalysts for the Vikings, UC finished the 2019 season with a 30-2 record (just the second time in school history the team won 30 games), a final ranking of No. 2 in the state, the best in school history, and captured the Union County, Union County Conference, and State Sectional titles. UC capped its season by advancing to the State Non-Public Championship for the second straight year; the Vikings fell to No. 1 ranked Immaculate Heart Academy.
Williams will be joining a very strong volleyball program at Virginia State, which finished 16-12 last year (12-3 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) and reached the semIfinals of the conference tournament.
