Volleyball: Union Catholic's Mackenzie Fuhrmann Named Conference Athlete of Year

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Union Catholic’s Mackenzie Fuhrmann has been chosen as the Union County Conference Volleyball Player of the Year for this past season by NJ.com.

Fuhrmann, a senior outside hitter, led the Vikings to a 28-4 record, and a final state ranking of No. 14 in the recently completed season. 

Fuhrmann, who lives in Berkeley Heights, established career highs in kills with 229 and digs with 183. She averaged 3.23 kills per set and topped 10 in several of her team’s biggest matches. In three matches against conference-rival Westfield, she racked up 37 kills in eight sets.

Fuhrmann reached double-digit kills twice in her first 16 matches and hit that mark fer five times in the 16 matches after that, and she was a very strong server for Coach Nancy Saggio’s team.

In UC’s state Non-Public semifinals loss to Hudson Catholic, Fuhrmann collected 15 kills and she had nine kills in an early-season loss to Immaculate Heart, which ended up as the No. 1 ranked team in New Jersey.

Fuhrmann concluded her remarkable career with 676 kills, and her digs this season tripled her previous career high of 61 set last fall.
