EDISON, NJ -- The Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison captured first place at the St. Joseph’s Chess Tournament.   Sixth-grader Jack Silver of Rahway was tremendous and triumphed again as the best-rated chess player. Fifth-grader Hannah Malko of Clark was astonishing and came in second for the best-rated player just being edged out of first place by the slightest of margins by Jack. Both Jack and Hannah continually defeated high school players at the tournament. Jack and Hannah lost only one game out of their 10 chess matches. Fifth-grader Charlie Silver of Rahway also added points to the team's overall win.

The team also included Henry Bowman of Scotch Plains, Siddharth Vaidya of Iselin, Declan Molloy of Belford and Neil Sethi, Veer Kansal and Aryan Nair, all of Edison. All nine W-H players contributed to the team championship. Every W-H chess player succeeded in winning at least one match, even the first graders.

“The kids loved the tournament and it was so much fun watching them all play well and acting as perfect gentlemen,” Coach Bob Kraynik said. “And Hannah is now officially coronated as our new queen of chess.”

Capitalist or Communist?

Karl Marx may have been the pioneer, but many other Jews were also involved in the struggle for communism, particularly in the early days of the Russian revolution. Personally, I don’t think that we have any apologies to make for this phenomenon. Having suffered unbearably under successive oppressive regimes, many of those political activists genuinely thought communism would be better ...
