EDISON, NJ -- The Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison hosted a Clean Water Action’s 31st annual conference on April 8. This annual event brings together over 200 residents, organizational leaders, scientists, policymakers, teachers and students who are focused on protecting water and creating more resilient and healthy communities.

W-H teachers Katherine Heiss of Red Bank and Donna Pedde of Cranford, parent Bonnie Farrell of Fords and student Jane Anderson-Schmitt of Scotch Plains attended the program, which began with a welcome from Andrew Webster, Head of School, and Amy Goldsmith, State Director of Clean Water Action. The day included several workshops, green vendors and an environmental roundtable with potential New Jersey Gubernatorial candidates.

“It was a pleasure to once again participate in the NJ Clean Water conference,” Ms. Heiss said. “This year we showcased our beautiful garden. Donna Pedde, Bonnie Farrell, and I were on hand to chat about our successes. Gardens don't magically appear, they take many hours of thought, planning, and maintenance and ours was no exception. What did we plant? Who watered the garden over the summer? Who designed it? How do we link to the curriculum? What did we do with the extra produce? What are our future plans? We spent time sharing our experiences and answering questions from visitors.”

Jane proudly displayed a beautiful painting of surfing in the ocean for which she received honorable mention in the Bow Seat Ocean Awareness art contest last September. She also shared materials about how ocean pollution affects the environment.

“The water conference this past Saturday was exciting. I choose to attend to support and benefit the environment. I've always had a great care for our oceans and art, and to be able to combine both for the better is incredibly rewarding. Every generation should care deeply about sustainability because all of us will live in the future,” Jane said.
