In honor of World Refugee Day on June 20, 2017, Refugee Assistance Partners NJ (RAP) will host a public screening of the film, “Warehoused.”  An estimated 12 million people live in refugee camps worldwide, and only 0.1% are resettled, repatriated, or integrated into normal society each year.  Only an extremely small percentage of this number are admitted for resettlement into the United States.  This feature-length documentary film explores the plight of long-term refugees through a glimpse into the lives of those living in Dadaab, Kenya, one of the world’s largest refugee camps.  “Warehoused,” tells the story of these courageous men and women’s struggle through hostile circumstances as they find a place they can call home.

Hosting this event is Refugee Assistance Partners NJ (RAP), a local non-profit organization who partners with individuals as well as faith communities, other community groups, and resettlement agencies to assist displaced persons by welcoming the stranger, attending to material needs, and offering friendship as well as hospitality to families in need.

Refugees face special challenges, because they come from war, persecution, and severe abuse or torture.  Refugees often have challenges acclimating, beyond just moving to a foreign country, after spending years in the inhumane conditions of some camps, often without schooling or work.  RAP provides community connections to compliment the social services provided by resettlement agencies. A variety of partners within RAP work to overcome the language and cultural differences which complicate some tasks.  With this help, refugees resettling into the United States, specifically in Union County, can and do make the transition to become working, self-sufficient community members who contribute to the well-being of their host community.

The public screening of this enlightening full-length film will be on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at Willow Grove Presbyterian Church, 1961 Raritan Rd., in Scotch Plains.  The facility is handicapped accessible and there is ample on-site parking.  The film does NOT contain any graphic images or strong language; parental discretion is advised due to the film's sensitive subject matter.  A short Question & Answer time will follow the film to provide specific information about RAP’s local work with refugee families, including some who have come from living for over a decade in camps.  For more information about the film or about RAP, email refugeeassistancepartnersnj@gmail.com.

What Are The Warning Signs of Suicide

The recent passings of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain remind us to take mental illness seriously.

Many of us feel uncomfortable to ask when someone in distress is suicidal for fear we are putting this thought in their minds. This is not true. It is a myth that asking about suicide increases the risk of suicide. The most common mental illness is depression. Some people are ...
