Each week, the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA highlights a member of their staff, a YMCA member or volunteer as part of their We Are Y Wednesdays series on social media. Today, meet Joan Feller, a participant in the Y's Parkinson’s Foundation Class, which is designed to address symptoms of Parkinson’s by incorporating a variety of exercises that target strength, balance, mobility and flexibility.
"When I was first diagnosed with Parkinsonism – a milder form - about a year or so ago, I looked into programs for people with Parkinson’s and I found out about this class.
I was a member here anyway. I know exercise can help and my doctor recommended it. Since I’ve been coming to these classes, I’m told by my family and doctor that I’m getting stronger. I enjoy coming here, and the instructor is always very positive. She is very good at what she does.
The classes are also a lot of fun. We don’t really talk about Parkinson’s, but it helps me knowing I’m not alone in this. To anyone recently diagnosed, I’d say, don’t be afraid of the diagnosis. Go out and meet it head on. You’re not falling apart that fast.”
