WESTFIELD, NJ —  NBC’s new reality show “First Dates” will feature Saverio “Sammy” Michielli, a barber at Kennedy’s All-American Barber Club in Westfield, in its May 5 episode.

Michielli, a Bayonne native, originally auditioned for MTV’s reality show “Jersey Shore.” He didn’t make it, but after posting a joke on the reality show’s Facebook page in 2015, he was contacted by the same casting agents to interview for their new show, “First Dates.”

According to the NBC website, the show offers a “voyeuristic look at a variety of real first dates happening throughout one night at the same restaurant in Chicago.” The show, based on a U.K. reality format, is produced by Ellen Degeneres and narrated by Drew Barrymore.

“It was a really fun experience,” Michielli said of the show. “I just figured I’d take things day by day and see what happens.”

Michielli auditioned via phone, then Skype, and eventually in-person before being flown to Chicago to film his episode in August.

“The first day of filming is an interview,” Michielli said. “They try to make you look bad, but I was smarter than that.”

Michielli said he was asked about his hobbies, his dating history, and his family before he was set up with an unknown woman for a blind dinner date.

“It was a complete blind date,” Michielli said. “It was a fun experience, but a bit nerve-wracking.”

When asked if he talked about his work on the show, Michielli, known to his regulars at Kennedy's as “the shave doctor,” said "of course."

“I love my job,” Michielli said. “Kennedy’s is the best atmosphere ever and has the best team ever. I’m looking to spend the rest of my days there.”

Although he said he enjoyed the experience, Michielli had a surprising answer when asked if he would go on the show again.

“No,” Michielli said. “I’m in a long-term relationship now and I’m really happy. I feel like I’ve met the right one. When you know, you know.”

However, he does hope viewers will see his episode and head to Kennedy’s for a shave.

“I wouldn’t mind a reality show at Kennedy’s,” Michielli said. “I’m all about shaving lives one day at a time.”

WESTFIELD, NJ — It likely started with a smoldering cigarette, according to Deputy Fire Chief Anthony Tiller.

What Are The Warning Signs of Suicide

The recent passings of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain remind us to take mental illness seriously.
