WESTFIELD, NJ -- On Wednesday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m., the Westfield Memorial Library will host, “The American Story through Folk Song” by singer Spook Handy. The library will also present, “Color your World,” a two-hour coloring workshop for adults on Tuesday, Aug. 8 at 10:00 a.m. to noon. The library is located at 550 East Broad Street.
Mr. Handy’s program tells the story of America over the past 80 years through the songs of folk troubadours, ranging from Woody Guthrie to Pete Seeger, through Peter Paul and Mary, and up to today.
It includes an ample supply of original turns that paint the picture of today’s America that he has discovered through his years of touring around this great nation. Mr. Handy honors the great traditions of American roots music, songs inspired by the Dust Bowl, Great Depression, Civil Rights Movement, and the 60s and 70s Peace Movement, and weaves in new songs about the world we live in today, presented with a completely contemporary sound and unabashedly positive sensibility. The passion, purpose, and spirit of American folk music are alive and well in the fun and uplifting concert.
Spook Handy was named Best Folk Artist by Upstage Magazine, Gannett New Jersey, The Courier News, The Home News, and About.com. He has written for theater and film, and his original songs have charted as high as #2 on the international folk songs charts.
Handy performed along with Pete Seeger at festivals and concerts, and is on a three-year, “Remembering Pete Seeger” World Tour, bringing these songs and stories and Pete’s message to all 50 U.S. states, all 10 Canadian provinces, and many other countries.
The coloring program allows adults a few unhurried hours with a coloring book. Whether people color inside or outside the lines, coloring is a fun and relaxing activity that allows adults to get their creative juices flowing without the need for any artistic talent.
The coloring patterns the library provides are abstract, geometric, intricate, and designed to appeal to adults. Coffee and tea is provided as well.
The coloring program is free and open to the public and requires no registration.
The Spook Handy program is open to Westfield Memorial Library and MURAL cardholders.
