SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- Designed as the antithesis of the crazed Black Friday discount dashes at major retailers, Small Business Saturday (Nov. 29th) was developed in 2010 by American Express to help drive business to locally owned, independent companies. It is a national effort to steer people towards finding unique gift items not available at the big chain stores.

"Having given thanks for our blessings on Thanksgiving, I encourage Fanwood residents to support the wide array of small, independent businesses that support our community all year long," said Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr. "They provide monetary donations and in-kind support for our Performance Series, Fanny Wood Day, Halloween festivities, summer Movies in the Park and other events that make Fanwood a great place to live. We owe our support to these fine merchants, many of whom live in town."

Among the diverse businesses in downtown Fanwood are unique toy and activity shop Be Craftful, Enchantments, which celebrates its 25th anniversary on Nov. 29th, Mara's Cafe, which is offering buy one/get one breakfast items from 7:00 - 9:00 a.m. on Small Business Saturday, Nick's Pizza, Oh Brian's Pourhouse, and Shovlin Mattress Factory, where the mattress are made locally.
