PLAINFIELD, NJ - The fatal shooting of a woman whose body was found in the backyard of a residence on Spruce Street in Plainfield early Thursday morning is under investigation.

The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Neelega Perry, according to a statement issued by Acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park.

Plainfield Police Division patrol units discovered Perry's body in the rear yard of a home on the 400 block of Spruce Street shortly after midnight Thursday. Perry, whom many Scotch Plains-Fanwood residents remember as a classmate at Park Middle School, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Breaking News Network, a small caliber pistol was located at the scene.

The case remains under active joint investigation by the Union County Homicide Task Force, Plainfield Police Division, and Union County Sheriff’s Office Identification Unit.
