SCOTCH PLAINS-FANWOOD, NJ – It looked like it would be a long evening for the Raiders as Kearny’s tough and aggressive wrestlers in the lighter weight classes took the first three matches of the evening at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School on Friday.

With his team down, Jeremy Lenart rallied from a 3-1 deficit against Vincent Ruccatano and tied the match at 3-3 in the third period, and then took down his opponent in overtime for the Raiders’ first victory of the evening. Next up, Jacob Perone came out quickly overwhelmed Matthew Molina and pinned him at 0:44.

Going into the final bout of the evening, Scotch Plains-Fanwood needed a victory by heavyweight Bobby Mount to win the match. Mount showed surprising quickness and frustrated his opponent, before ending the match with a dramatic pinning of Kearny’s Paul Fadeski with less than a minute left in the match.

"There was a lot of pressure placed on Bobby; he knew that he had to either win by major decision or pin in order to capture a team victory. Having him perform as well as he did under those conditions was amazing,” said assistant coach Jesse Martinez after the match.

“Perrone has been performing very well lately and certainly exceeded expectations tonight. Palazzolo and Oslislo came up with pins, and Eddie Smith, who had been out with injuries this year, was strong, despite dropping a 2-1 decision," Martinez added. "This is a huge victory for us.”

I think the fact that he is a Senior and  that the regular season of wrestling is coming to a close soon is starting to resonate. In response he’s taking his game to that next level.

Martinez said tonight’s victory over Kearny would give the Raiders (13-6) a better seeding in the upcoming state sectional tournament. Before the match, athletic director Ryan Miller and the wrestling coaches held a brief ceremony to honor senior Sam Wustefeld on his 100th victory in Cranford on Wednesday.

Why We Keep Kosher

Why We Keep Kosher

This week's parshah, Shemini, introduces the Torah's dietary laws. Animals must chew their cud and have split hooves to be kosher, fish need fins and scales, and a list of forbidden fowl is enumerated.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.
