SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ – Host team Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School finished third behind private school powerhouses Seton Hall Prep and St. Peter’s Prep at the District 16 Wrestling Championship on Saturday, Feb. 22.

It was a strong performance for the Raiders, who had four wrestlers in the finals of their weight classes and two who competed in the third-place matches.

Brandon Bowles (126 lbs.), Anthony Robinson (152 lbs.), Larry Shoyoye (192 lbs.), and Robert Lerner (220 lbs.) finished second and Noah Samms (145 lbs.) and Roberth Mehorter (192 lbs.) finished third to advance to the Regional tourney on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at Union High School.

“This is our best performance in the past five years,” said Scotch Plains-Fanwood varsity coach Marc Fabiano. “We had four guys in the finals and two third-place finishers. I couldn't be more proud of this team. The future is very bright; next year we return a lot of guys who competed next year.”

Sergio Maglione of JFK High School, the 170 lb. winner, was voted the “Wrestler of the Meet.” Ishmael Medley of Elizabeth was voted Coach of the Year, and Scotch Plains-Fanwood’s John Scholz was named Assistant Coach of the Year.
