Union, NJ – Scotch Plains-Fanwood wrestlers -- Jashmar Philippe (132), Sam Wustefeld (170) and Jalen Bryant (195) -- are looking to rebound from losses in the first round of the NJSIAA Region III Tournament on Friday night.

Jashmar Philippe was the first wrestler up against Bob Dinger who was the 4-seed for Middle Sex Dunellen. Philippe got down early and was never able to get back in the match. Dinger’s strength lead him to a 9-1 lead and later a pin in the second period.

“I have to go into tomorrow with a better mindset,” Philippe said. Knowing tomorrow could be my last match ever, I don’t want to end my career on a loss.”

Sam Wustefeld had a heart-breaking loss to Andrew Tompkins of Cranford. Wustefeld was up 1-0 with 15 seconds left in the 3rd period and Tompkins scored a take down leaving Wustefeld almost no time to try and tie it up.

Jalen Bryant had the toughest matchup of the night, facing the number 1-seeded Thomas Rigas from Whippany Park. Bryant showed toughness after tying it up 2-2 in the first, but Thomas seemed on a mission as he scored five straight points and then pinning Bryant in the third.

“We wrestled tough today and got it out of our system,” coach Marc Fabiano said. “I’m going to tell the guys to forget about it and that tomorrow is a new day.”

Although all three wrestlers lost, they still have a chance to make states. Wrestlebacks will begin Saturday, Feb. 27, at 9:00 a.m. in the Union High School Gymnasium.

RESULTS:
132: Bob Dinger (MIDU) over Jashmar Philippe (SPF) – Pin 3:56
170: Andrew Tompkins (CRAN) over Sam Wustefeld (SPF) – Decision 2-1
195: Thomas Rigas (WHPA) over Jalen Bryant (SPF) – Pin 5:29

Why We Keep Kosher

Why We Keep Kosher

This week's parshah, Shemini, introduces the Torah's dietary laws. Animals must chew their cud and have split hooves to be kosher, fish need fins and scales, and a list of forbidden fowl is enumerated.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.
