SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- Jake Canavan is quickly emerging as one of the best hitters in Union County. The speedy outfielder's impressive performance at the plate for the Scotch Plains-Fanwood baseball team is why he's this week's Yeti MMA Athlete of the Week.
Jake Canavan continued his hot hitting by going 3-for-3 with two runs scored against Union Catholic on Thursday. He also made two great catches in center and has played spectacular defense all season long.
Canavan is batting .571 this season. The senior collected 11 hits and scored three runs during a marathon week (four games in four days) for the Raiders, in addition to being at the forefront of the team's big win against Union Tuesday.
In addition to swinging a scorching-hot bat, Canavan has been making highlight-reel plays in center field all spring. Saturday in Elizabeth, he stunned the crowd with two lay-out diving catches, and made two more spectacular catches that displayed his range Thursday at Union Catholic.
Canavan and the Raiders will look to get back on the beam Saturday morning at West Morris-Mendham after two tough loses to strong parochial teams St. Joseph (Metutchen) and Union Catholic this week.
