SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ — Teddy Willmott has been a key factor in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Raiders boys’ basketball team’s success this year. His recent dominance on the hardwood has landed him this week’s Yeti MMA Athlete of the Week honors.

Willmott is the team’s leading scorer. In 19 games this season, the sharpshooter has scored 42 three pointers — by far the most on the team. Willmott has scored 173 total points, good for a tick under 10 points per game. Additionally, the senior guard has had 10 games in which he’s scored double digits in points.

"Teddy has been having a great season so far, as he really has been able to stretch the floor for us with his long range shooting ability,” said second-year head coach Steve Siracusa. “He has hit some big, clutch shots which electrifies the crowd and ignites our team.”

In addition to lighting it up in the gym, Willmott, one of four seniors on the Raider squad, has emerged as a true team leader.

“Besides his play on the court, his leadership on and off the court has been instrumental in the turnaround of our basketball program this season,” Siracusa said. “Lastly, Teddy is a great player but even better person who strives to do well in all his endeavors. That is the part that I am most proud of Teddy for."

Willmott and the Raiders will look continue their amazing turnaround (from a 3-21 season last year) when they host Oratory at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the first round of the Union County Tournament. The Raiders, 18-2, are the No. 6 seed -- one of the team's highest seeds ever in the tournament. It'll be a tough bracket, however, with national and state powers, such as Linden, Patrick School, Roselle Catholic, St. Mary’s, and Union Catholic.

Each Yeti MMA Athlete of the Week honoree is invited to submit an essay entitled, "What It Means to Be a Student-Athlete." The winning submission will receive a $1,000 TAPintoSPF-Yeti MMA scholarship in June 2017.

The Yeti MMA Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Yeti MMA and its owner, David Martin. Located at 2507 Route 22 West in Scotch Plains (next to Bowcraft), the facility offers training in a variety of disciplines: boxing, kickboxing, Brazilian jiu jitsu, Muay Thai, wrestling, and strength training.
