Yeti MMA Athlete of the Week: Football's Izu Mozie

Yeti MMA Athete of the Week Izu Mozie was honored at the Scotch Plains Council meeting on Tuesday, March 21 Credits: John Mooney

SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ — Previously pegged as a Yeti MMA Athlete of the Week for his shotput performance, two-sport Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School star Izu Mozie has landed this week’s honors for his other sport — football.

This week, Mozie, a senior, was named to the 2017 Snapple Bowl Union County team. A key cog on Scotch Plains’ line this past season, Mozie recorded 31 tackles last season, his final as a Raider. That brought his career total of tackles to 83. The 6’0, 230-pound lineman also caused and recovered a fumble last season.

The Snapple Bowl is an annual high school football all-star game played between the best senior players for Union and Middlesex counties. Mozie is the only Scotch Plains-Fanwood Raider to be nominated to play in the game.

Mozie was a bright spot in an otherwise dark year for Scotch Plains-Fanwood football. The Raiders, for the second year in a row, were victorious in just one game, that being a consolation  game win against Millburn. After the season, Mozie and the Raiders’ head coach for the last few season, Jon Stack, announced his resignation from the program.

In January, the SPFK12 district announced the hiring of new head football coach Mark Ciccotelli, a highly known, respected and successful high school football coach who will begin work on rebuilding the Scotch Plains-Fanwood football program this summer, when football practice begins.

But before then, Mozie will represent the Raiders in the Snapple Bowl, which will be played on Thurs., July 20 at Kean University in Union.

Each Yeti MMA Athlete of the Week honoree is invited to submit an essay entitled, "What It Means to Be a Student-Athlete." The winning submission will receive a $1,000 TAPintoSPF-Yeti MMA scholarship in June 2017.

The Yeti MMA Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Yeti MMA and its owner, David Martin. Located at 2507 Route 22 West in Scotch Plains (next to Bowcraft), the facility offers training in a variety of disciplines: boxing, kickboxing, Brazilian jiu jitsu, Muay Thai, wrestling, and strength training. Call (908) 858-5558 and mention the TAPintoSPF-Yeti MMA Athlete of the Week and get a 15% discount on a one-year membership. For more information, email
