Yeti MMA Athlete of the Week: Track and Field's Izu Mozie

SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ — It’s been a very successful year for all sorts of teams in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Track and Field program, and Izu Mozie’s recent accomplishments have further proven that. Mozie’s dominance last Saturday have pegged him as this week’s Yeti MMA Athlete of the Week.

In the NJSIAA North 2, Group 3 Shot Put sectionals, Izu Mozie won the boys’ Group 3 title with a throw of 50 feet. The throw came on Mozie’s first attempt of the day, a rare feet in Shot Putting. Additionally, it set a personal-best for Mozie, a senior. 

“Lots of hard work went into that - in the circle and in the weight room,” Raiders cross country/track and field head coach Jeff Koegel said on the Raiders XC/T&F twitter account.

With the victory in the Sectional Finals, Mozie is qualified for the NJSIAA Group 3 Championships, which are this weekend at the Bennett Center in Toms River. Mozie is one of 24 boys in the state to qualify and compete for the Group 3 title. Of the 24, Mozie’s send mark of 50 feet is the fourth-best. Ahead of him are Toms River South’s Todd Stueber (54 ft), Lakewood’s Joshua Lezin (53 ft) and Hammonton’s Jon Vega (50 ft). 

Each Yeti MMA Athlete of the Week honoree is invited to submit an essay entitled, "What It Means to Be a Student-Athlete." The winning submission will receive a $1,000 TAPintoSPF-Yeti MMA scholarship in June 2017.
