Dear Editor:

There is no COVID-19 report from the board of health this week, but I want to point out that with more and more vaccinations in folks’ arms, the CDC has revised the guidelines for safe activities. I know the ever-changing directives can be confusing, so please rely on the CDC for the best advice at cdc.gov/coronavirus.

Many thanks to the Shade Tree Commission for hosting one of the first live events in Fanwood in over a year! On Arbor Day it was a delight to see the Park Middle School Environmental Club enjoying this annual observance along with Commission Chair Steve Falco. Although the Flea Market was rained out last weekend, I expect fine weather on Sunday for the rain date. I hope you will stop by the South Avenue Train Station to browse the stalls – while of course observing all COVID protocols!

Also on Sunday, I’ll be at the Food Truck Festival at the High School in support of the Class of 2021!  There will not only be a wide variety of delicious food offerings, but you will be treated to performances of the SPF Marching Band, the Moonglowers, and more!  If you’ve never had the pleasure to hear these award-winning groups I promise, you won’t be disappointed. I am always inspired by the caliber of musical talent these groups showcase.

On a more somber note, the Fanwood family has lost another of our great friends with the death of Bob Kruthers, who passed peacefully at home last weekend at age 94. For more than 60 years Bob served on the Fanwood Rescue Squad and has helped thousands of sick or injured people over the decades.  His kindness and caring did not end there.  Bob was an active member of St. Bart’s parish as a teacher and Eucharistic Minister.  He was honored many times over the years and awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award of the NJ Statewide EMS Conference.  Bob is survived by his wife Grace, of 72 years, two daughters, and brother.  Our prayers are with the family in this time of sadness.

As always, if you are in need of assistance, or we can help you in any way, please reach out to me at mayor@fanwoodnj.org. We are here to help.

Have a lovely weekend,

Colleen Mahr
Mayor of Fanwood
