Dear Editor:

My name is Patti Murgo. I am Committeewoman in Linden’s Eighth Ward. I am a life-long  DEMOCRAT, a party activist, and a believer in what being a democrat stands for. Last week, I received a piece of literature from our municipal chairman, Nick Scutari, regarding his “plans” for the County Democratic Party if he is elected county chairman.

Mr. Scutari has been our chairman for the last 3 years. During that time he has neither proposed nor implemented any of his new ideas for party building. Here in Linden, Chairman Scutari has 1 meeting every 2 years to select the municipal chair. That’s it. No meetings, no party building… NOTHING. In a city with a history of being a Democratic stronghold, the role of committee person has been reduced to ensuring his position of power and nothing else.

Mr. Scutari is a State Senator, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, the Linden Democratic Chairman, the Linden Municipal Prosecutor, and a lawyer in private practice. He recently installed his Chief of Staff -- with no managerial experience -- as the Union County Manager. Now he wants to be our County Chair.

Are there any limits to his quest for power?  And the fact that a small group of politicians—the “good old boys” as I call them, decided that Mr. Scutari should be our county chairman speaks volumes as to what kind of Chairman he would be. My question to the committee is, who were the people in the room when this “anointment” was made?

I am supporting Colleen Mahr to be our next County Chair. Colleen has been our vice-chair for the last five years. She has been the Mayor for the last 15 years. She believes in the principles of our party and has worked tirelessly to help build the Democratic Party not only in Fanwood and other towns in our county. And Colleen believes that good government is good politics, something that our county party leaders seem have forgotten along the way.

And for those of you who don’t know me, I have never shied away from a battle for what I believe in.  And I believe in Colleen Mahr. She is the leader that our party needs. I urge you to join me in electing Colleen as our next county democratic chair on February 21 at 7:00 P.M, Grand Centurion, 440 Madison Hill Rd, Clark, NJ. Doors open at 5:30 P.M.

Sincerely,

Patti Murgo
Linden, NJ

Sinai or Sanctuary?

And in the beginning, G‑d was homeless, and so G‑d asked His people to set Him up with some digs. Where does it say that? Well, nowhere, actually. But it does say that G‑d instructed Moses to tell the people, “They shall make for Me a Sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.”

Now the question is, was G‑d really homeless? ...

February 20, 2018

Dear Editor:

As a 26-year-old Scotch Plains resident who cares more about the well-being of our town than about local politics, I am extremely disappointed that the Scotch Plains Democratic Committee leadership has decided to abandon Colleen Mahr in her run for Chair of the Union County Democratic Committee.

Mahr, who as Mayor of Fanwood for 15 years has worked closely with Scotch Plains ...
