Dear Editor:

On behalf of the Scotch Plains Township Council, Census Complete Count Committee, and St. John’s Baptist Church, we invite all residents to attend the Census Town Hall and Information session on Thursday, February 20, 2020, at 7:00 p.m. at St. John’s Baptist Church (2387 Morse Ave). This event will help prepare residents with critical information about the importance of the 2020 Census. Residents will also have the opportunity to ask questions to U.S. Census Bureau staff at this event.

Getting a complete count in Scotch Plains is a must. In 2010, Scotch Plains had an 87 percent response rate. While this is an excellent response rate, that 13 percent non-response rate could mean the difference between more or less funding for Scotch Plains.

Completing the Census is part of your civic duty and all residents should complete their census questionnaires when they start receiving them in mid-March. Census results will determine our Congressional and State Legislative representation as well as the distribution of key funds to our community on services ranging from roads, infrastructure, schools, libraries, and emergency services. Failure to complete your Census could deny us critical resources.

St. John’s Baptist Church is honored to host this very important event, and we strongly urge everyone to come to St. John’s Baptist Church to learn more about the importance of the Census.

Hope to see you on February 20!

Al Smith, Mayor (Chairman of the Scotch Plains Census Complete Count Committee)
Roc White, Councilman (Council Liaison to the Scotch Plains Census Complete Count Committee)
Rev. Shawn Wallace (Faith-Based Leader to the Scotch Plains Census Complete Count Committee)
