Students Win Public Service Video Contest

February 15, 2013 at 11:19 AM

SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ – Six students at the SPF High School have been named as the winners of a nationwide contest on traffic safety sponsored by SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) and The National Road Safety Foundation, a non-profit organization that promotes safe driving.

SADD is the nation’s leading youth-based, peer-to-peer education, prevention and activism organization dedicated to preventing destructive decisions, particularly underage drinking, other drug use, risky and impaired driving, and teen violence and suicide.

Nick Patel, Lucy Hollander, Amanda Marcus, Rachel Schack, Mia Rossi and Caitlin Flood, all 16, are members of the local chapter of SADD along with chapter advisor Marjorie Fitzgibbon.  When the contest was announced, they decided to enter and won for their public service message called "Share the Road."

They have won the right to work with Emmy-winning TV producer Alan Weiss to produce their video and they will also receive a grant from the National Road Safety Foundation to help pay their travel expenses to the SADD National Conference this summer in Orlando, where their video will be shown to nearly 1,000 attendees from throughout the U.S.

The students' winning idea encourages drivers to share the road by being aware of other drivers.  It shows various athletes saying that they do not share while playing, shows them avoiding dangerous driving situations and then all the players say, "When we step onto the field, sharing isn't our thing.  But on the road, sharing is our only option."

The National Road Safety Foundation (NRSF, partners with youth advocacy groups like SADD to encourage young people to be aware of safe driving issues and to educate their peers about them.   NRSF sponsors contests for teens, which can be seen at the "Teen Lane" pages of the Foundation's site at www.nrsf.org.
