SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- On April 11, Jewish students from Congregation Beth Israel in Scotch Plains and Mrs. Kouser Izhar, a Moslem woman from East Brunswick, met at the synagogue for a conversation about Islam.

Kouser, an information technology professional, offered to teach the seventh-grade students about Islam when she heard of their interest in learning about other religions. Kouser Izhar had met Gail Beckman Buchbinder, Education Director of Congregation Beth Israel, through the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom, an organization that builds strong relationships between Muslim and Jewish women.

The students will continue to meet representatives of various faiths; the next guest to Congregation Beth Israel’s Religious School will teach the seventh-graders about Catholicism.
