EDISON, NJ -- Janessa Mendoza, who served as a co-captain on the girls basketball team and is the Student Council President at Union Catholic, was honored by the NJSIAA as Union Catholic's Scholar Athlete of the Year at a special banquet at the Pines Manor on Sunday.

Mendoza, who lives in Edison and will attend Georgetown University, played guard on the UC basketball team that finished 12-10 this past winter, and has received several prestigious awards during her senior year.

Mendoza was honored with a scholarship from the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program earlier this month,. She received a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program, was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for her service by the Pastoral Musicians of the Diocese of Metuchen for her 10 years of dedicated service. She's also a member of the National Honor Society and World Language Honor Society, Students For Human Dignity and the Environmental Club.

Mendoza said she surprised herself by how much she accomplished as a student at UC and appreciates all the great opportunities that the school provided for her.

"I had no idea that I'd be capable of accomplishing this much at UC,'' said Mendoza. "But I've cherished every moment. Whenever someone asks me how I juggle all these activities, I never have an answer because I always surprise myself. My journey has been fulfilling and unforgettable. I've loved representing UC and I'm positive I'll be back in the future. I hope my achievements have left a lasting impression and allow people to realize how many valuable opportunities are available to everyone.''
