Swimming: Fanwood Scotch Plains YMCA (FSPY) Finishes in 7th Place at YMCA Short Course National Championship

FSPY Seniors National Swimmmers

GREENSBORO, NC -- Fanwood Scotch Plains YMCA (FSPY) swim team finished 7th overall at the YMCA Short Course National Championship held in Greensboro, North Carolina, from April 3rd to April 7th.

Sixteen FSPY swimmers qualified for this highly competitive meet against 207 other YMCA swim teams from across the country.  After 5 days of competition, FSPY swimmers delivered 2 National Titles (one individual and one relay) and set 7 new individual records and 2 relay records.

The team started the meet with an astounding first place finish in the Girls 200 Medley Relay. Congratulations to Erika Frazier, Rachel Maizes, Monika Burzynski and Darlene Fung on the National Title. This is the 2nd consecutive year that the FSPY Girls 200 Medley Relay team has captured the Short Course National Title. In addition, they also took First Place at last summer’s 2017 Long Course Y Nationals.

On the 2nd night, Josh Cohen, the top point scorer for the team, had a blazing 200 Free time to clinch the National title and set a new team record. Cohen dominated the distance events with 3 top 10 finishes: 5th in the 500 Free, 7th in the 1000 Free, and 4th in the 1650 Free. With these fast swims he reset his records in 1000 and 1650 Free. Darlene Fung led the girls with 3 top 10 finishes: 6th in the 100 Fly, 3rd in the 50 Free, 5th in the 100 Free.  Darlene also set a new team record in the 100 Free and reset her own 50 Free record. Other top 16 finishers were Monika Burzynski (7th in the 100 Fly),  Rachel Maizes  (13th in the 100 Breast) and Marlise Moesch (12th in the 200 Free, 15th in the 100 Free).

Darien Betances set a new team record in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:08.24.

The Boys set new team records in the 400 Free and 800 Free Relays. John Piccinic, Julian Park, Logan D’Amore and Josh Cohen finished in 10th place in the 400 Free Relay with a new record of 3:05.73.  Logan D’ Amore, Alan Shao, John Piccinic, Josh Cohen took down the 800 Free Relay record with a time of 6:49.88.

The Girls relay teams continued their strong showing as they took 3 top 10 finishes.  In the 400 Free Relay, the team of Moesch, Fung, DeeDee Maizes and R. Maizes placed 9th. In the 200 Free Relay, the team of Moesch, Fung, Fraizer, R. Maizes captured 5th. In the 800 Free Relay, the team of  D. Maizes, Moesch, Fung, Burzynski took 9th, while in the 400 Medley Relay, the team of Fung, R. Maizes, Burzynski and Moesch placed 5th.
