SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- The devastation that Hurricane Maria inflicted on the people of Puerto Rico last month really hit home for Union Catholic’s Charlize Colon.

“It was especially upsetting to me because my whole family is from Puerto Rico,’’ said Colon, a sophomore at UC. “My Grandparents and my mother (Lissette) were all born there and I have cousins that live there now, so it really hit me hard. All my cousins are okay, but lots of people in Puerto Rico need help.’’

Determined to help, Colon took matters into her own hands and showed great initiative when she recently approached Union Catholic Spanish Teacher, Mrs. Catarina Portillo, with an idea.

“Charlize came to me and she asked if we could do something here at UC for the victims in Puerto Rico,’’ said Mrs. Portillo. “This has impacted her and her family, so I think it’s courageous that she came to me and asked if we could do something.’’

With Colon serving as the catalyst, a World Language Department Donation Drive was created here at UC for victims in Puerto Rico.

The items needed for the Donation Drive include baby wipes, hand sanitizer, diapers, canned foods, laundry detergent, mosquito repellent, and dish soap. Please bring all donations to room 122 by this Thursday, Oct. 12.

Union Catholic’s Students For Human Dignity also pitched in with a Bake Sale as all proceeds will go to victims in Puerto Rico.

Mrs. Portillo said Colon’s actions speak volumes about the kind of person she is.

“Charlize is a very kind-hearted and loving and compassionate person,’’ said Mrs. Portillo. “For her to come to me with this idea was just beautiful.’’

Colon said it feels good to help those in need.

“I wanted to help any way I could,’’ said Colon. “I wanted to feel like I’m doing something for the people of Puerto Rico. They are going through such a difficult time right now. Giving them some much needed supplies is the least we can do.’’

What Is Your Bottom Line?

This week's Parshah (Torah reading) is the Parshah of Pinchas the Zealot: the courageous young priest who stood up against idolatry and immorality and, in the end, saved Israel from a devastating plague.

While Pinchas' radical response made him a hero worthy of having a Torah section named after him, we wouldn't necessarily suggest to our children ...
