WESTFIELD, NJ --  In a showdown between state powerhouses and undefeated county rivals, the Union Catholic girls volleyball team edged Westfield in a three-set thriller on Wednesday.

Led by the dynamic duo of Alexandra Kwasnik and Olivia Szyszkiewicz, Union Catholic, ranked No. 4 in the state by NJ.com, defeated No. 15 Westfield, 25-23, 25-27, 25-22.

Union Catholic improved to 6-0 with the win and Westfield fell to 7-1

Since the 2015 season, Union Catholic, which beat Westfield in the Union County final last year, now has an 8-4 edge on its Union County Conference foe. The two teams have split the past six meetings.

Kwasnik led the way for the Vikings with 16 kills, which established a new career-high for the senior. The 10 kills from Szyszkiewicz was a season high.

Adrienne Caceda and Abbey Ortiz did a great job moving the ball around, combining for 23 assists. Ortiz added three of the UC's  nine aces. Aliyah Thomas hd a strong game defensively for UC with four big blocks.

Union Catholic and Westfield will meet again on Oct. 2 at Union Catholic.
