Valentine’s Day is a day filled with Hallmark cards, chocolate covered strawberries, red roses and special dining. It’s a day to express our love and affection to those close to us.
Some of us have expectations that this day will be blissful, we may even receive that diamond ring that represents engagement or marriage.
Valentine’s Day can be a wonderful time if you are in a relationship, but difficult if you find yourself alone. It’s easy to let the media and advertising make you think something is wrong if you are not in a dating relationship on this special day. Although you may feel like you are the only one without a date on Valentine’s Day, there are many who are in the same situation and others who have just endured a break up.
Is it possible that we give this holiday more importance than it warrants? The emphasis we place on the importance of the holiday can set us up for disappointment.
There is no rule that you need to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
If you are single, plan a night with friends and go out. It is a good time to take care of yourself and treat yourself. Schedule a massage, go to the gym, read a book, take a yoga class, order in a delicious meal, or watch your favorite movie. Reach out to someone who has recently experienced a break up or a loss. It becomes a win-win situation by helping each other.
Our mental attitude has a lot to do with how we perceive the holiday. You can decide to feel sorry for yourself or reverse your thinking and focus on the positive things you do have. How you think affects your emotions, feelings, relationships with others and your overall happiness in life. The way in which you think can lead you to talking yourself into, or out of, certain emotions or behaviors.
