SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- It's a somewhat rare occasion to win a championship, and it's even rarer to win two in one week. However, that's what during the past week as the Scotch Plains-Fanwood gymnastics won its second straight Union County title and girls volleyball team won its first ever state crown.
The Scotch Plains-Fanwood girls volleyball completed their historic season with a three-set triumph over Colonia 25-18, 13-25, 25-16. Senior Adelina Berisha, a recent Joint Motion Physical Therapy Athlete of the Week, saved her best for last with a dominating third set performance. She finished with 24 kills, 1 block, 4 digs, 3 service points won, and an ace. Her career totals are astounding: 611 kills, 331 digs, 225 service points won, and 125 aces.
The Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School gymnastics team repeated as Union County Champions after posting a season high 108.525 team score versus rivals Westfield and Summit to secure first place. It was a sweet victory for new head coach Marissa DiBella.
