Marble, Quartz, Granite — What is the Best Choice for Your Counter?

Brigid Robertshaw & Marisa O'Brien

Are you thinking about remodeling an outdated kitchen or bath? There are so many wonderful choices these days when it comes to countertop materials ... it can be hard to decide which to use. Here are a few that are favored by today’s buyers and therefore, would increase the value of your home!

Granite has been a popular choice for a long time. It is a natural stone that is mined from quarries in large chunks, then cut and polished. A new twist on granite countertops is a rough honed finish which is a more matte version with a little texture. Granite comes in a large variety of colors/patterns and is heat resistant. However, since it is a natural stone and is porous, it can stain so it should be sealed once a year.

Quartz is manufactured composite that is growing in popularity. It is non-porous, stain resistant, and resistant to heat. Since it's non-porous, bacteria doesn't get trapped in it. It is manufactured by combining around 90 percent + ground natural quartz stone with around 5-10 percent polymer resins and color pigments. Quartz is stronger than granite and there is no need to reseal Quartz. It's durability and low maintenance coupled with a great variety to choose from makes this a popular option. Most recently, manufacturers are able to make quartz countertop options that look incredibly similar to Carrara marble. Homeowners that want the look of marble without the upkeep and pricetag are opting for this material.

The real Carrara marble is an exquisite natural stone. It is very popular, especially in Europe. The stone is mined at the famous Carrara marble quarries in Italy. There are different varieties. Basic Carrara marble, which is grayish white with gray veining throughout (seen a lot on bakery countertops due to its ability to stay cool). Calacatta marble is more white and has dramatic thicker veining. Statuary marble is the whitest and the most precious. It has very little veining, which makes it perfect for statues. The downside of marble as a countertop is that it is porous and does stain quite easily. It requires maintenance and care.
The best choice for you will depend on your personal taste, budget and tolerance for effort in maintaining your countertops. All are stunning!
