The last week of January marks Catholic Schools Week across the country.  It is a time to celebrate the unique traditions and academic excellence of Catholic schools.

Catholic schools allow parents to educate their children in a faith- based environment.   At Saint Joseph High School, the administration practices a holistic approach to education, nurturing not only the academic side of the scholastic experience, but tending to the spiritual, physical and emotional requirements of each young man.

“We believe that a young person learns from his total experience in the school setting. We attempt to address the religious, academic, social, psychological, physical, and cultural development of the young person through the school's programs, courses, and policies,” reads a passage from the Educational Mission and Ministry of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, the religious congregation that founded SJHS in 1901.

Catholic Education puts a strong emphasis on academics and focuses on high school as an investment in a young person’s future.

Saint Joseph’s class of 2017 had 100% college acceptance.  77% of graduates received scholarship money and those scholarships totaled more than $23 million.  Saint Joseph’s students have been accepted into prestigious institutions such as Harvard, Cornell and Princeton.

Although academics are the cornerstone of the SJHS community, administrators encourage a healthy dose of school spirit and camaraderie.  There is a good mix of work and fun which helps to build the brotherhood of SJHS students that lasts long beyond a student’s four years on campus.

Catholic Schools Week celebrations were in full swing at SJHS this week with a variety of daily activities.   There was a faculty/student dodge ball tournament, a campus casual day, a handball tournament and even an opportunity to pie a teacher in the face for one student as his SJHS brothers looked on.

The culminating event for the week was a dance open to SJHS boys and all local high school girls on Friday night.

The Missing Moses

A seemingly dubious distinction belongs to this week’s Parshah, Tetzaveh (Exodus 27:20–30:10). It is the only reading in the Torah — from the first Parshah of the book of Exodus (in which he is born) until the end of the book of Numbers — where the name of Moses is not mentioned. Tetzaveh’s opening words are V’atah ...

February 21, 2018

Dear Editor:

There is a quote, attributed to various people, including Albert Einstein that states, “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result”, that is fitting for our current election for Union County Democratic Committee (UCDC) chair.

There is no shortage of polling data related to the functioning of our Federal, ...
