Course on Biblical Interpretation Taught by Rutgers Professor

Congregation Beth Israel in Scotch Plains will hold an eight-session course, “The Enchantment of Midrash,” taught by Dr. Azzan Yadin-Israel, Professor of Jewish Studies and Classics at Rutgers University. Classes begin on January 17 and meet from 7-9:30 p.m. on eight Wednesday evenings.  The course is open to adults in the community.

The course will provide an introduction to rabbinic biblical interpretation, known as midrash. It also will examine how the midrash treats several biblical themes, such as the creation of the world, the binding of Isaac and the Joseph narrative.

Tuition is $400 for all eight classes. Class dates include: January 17, 24 and 31; February 7, 14 and 21; March 7 and 21.

"We are excited to be able to bring another college level class to our community," said Gary Goldner, chair of Congregation Beth Israel’s Adult Education committee, sponsor of the event.  “The course is designed to appeal to everyone, regardless of your educational background or religious affiliation.”

Spiritualism, on the other hand, is how we describe the practices of ...
