Free Graduation Recital in Westfield on June 12, 2019

The Junior Musical Club of Westfield will hold its annual Graduation Recital at the First Baptist Church, 170 Elm Street, Westfield, on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at 7:30 pm. The concert is open to the public free of charge. The recital celebrates high school seniors in the club about to leave for college.

Violinist Julia Filimonczuk is a senior at Cranford High School. She will present Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto, Op. 8, No. 10 “La caccia” and also Felix Borowski's Adoration.

Julia has been playing the violin for nine years in school and with Mrs. Lubove Schnable and Ms. Debra Biderman in private tutorials. Julia also plays the violin at Evangel Church in Scotch Plains. She will be attending Southeastern University, Lakeland, Florida as a nursing major.

Clarinetist, composer, and pianist Rachel Hamelburg is a senior at Westfield High School. She will perform Johannes Brahms' Clarinet Sonata No.1 in F Minor, Op. 120, No. 1, Movement 1 "Allegro appassionato"; and the world premiere of her own composition Tales of Gustav (inspired by the novel The Gustav Sonata).

Rachel has been playing piano and clarinet for ten years, recently studying clarinet with Mr. Chris Dellarso, has traveled with the Westfield High School Wind Ensemble to Italy, and to Indianapolis for the All National Concert Band Festival. Rachel composes, has taken music theory classes, and has entered several songwriting competitions. Rachel will attend the University of Rochester NY and plans to take instrumental lessons at the Eastman School of Music.

Pianist Ashlen Suen is a senior at Westfield High School and is a member of the National Honor Society. He will be offering Frédéric Chopin's Nocturne in B-flat minor, Op. 9, No. 1.

Ashlen has has played piano for thirteen years, the clarinet for nine, and has been in the Westfield High School Wind Ensemble for three years. He will attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison business school as a marketing and finance major.

Pianist Katie Zhuang is a senior at Union County Magnet High School in Scotch Plains. She will perform Claude Debussy's Arabesque No. 1; Pyotr Tchaikovsky's The Seasons, Op. 37a, No. 5, "May, Starlit Night"; and Johann Sebastian Bach's French Suite No.3 in B minor, Movement 1, "Allemande".

Katie has been studying piano for eight years under Mrs. Elena Bartolf. She participated in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School marching band and was in her school’s music club. She plans to enter the Arts and Sciences College at Rutgers University, majoring in computer science.

The concert will be followed by a reception to greet the artists, to congratulate them on their success in high school, and to offer every good wish as they start their university years.
