SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- The Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS Repertory Theatre is proud to present this year's musical production Chicago: High School Edition. This legendary Broadway production is a raucous, jazzy, irreverent musical that will surely to razzle and dazzle.
Performances will be Friday, March 6; Saturday, March 7; Thursday, March 12; Friday, March 13; and Saturday, March 14; at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a matinée on Sunday, March 8 at 2:00 p.m. All performances will take place in the Manya Unger Auditorium at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School (667 Westfield Road, Scotch Plains).
Chicago celebrates the glorious excesses of the Jazz Age and holds up a mirror to the nation in fun and provocative ways. This iconic musical is tastefully edited for community audiences. While the subject matter is mature and may not be enjoyable for small children, families with older children need not shy away. You’ll be mesmerized by the music and the satirical tale of the merry murderesses determined to find fame, fortune and all that jazz.
Set in the Roaring '20s, Chicago tells the story of two rival vaudevillians vying for the spotlight while biding their time in Cook County Jail. Roxie Hart is on death row for the murder of her faithless lover. Velma Kelly denies her ruthless crimes, but will do whatever it takes to be acquitted and back on stage. The sensationalist lawyer, Billy Flynn, is the ring master at the center of the media circus surrounding the trial. Will he be able to design the headlines they need not only to be free, but to become the celebrities they’ve always dreamed they could be?
This production of Chicago involves over 100 students, including the crew and live pit orchestra. The cast is under the artful direction and creative supervision of Mr. Morgan Knight (Director), Mrs. Jan Allen (Producer and Music Director), Ms. Courtney Nemec (Assistant Director), Ms. Kara Drake (Choreographer), Mr. Trey Shore (Pit Orchestra Conductor), Mr. Jeff Allen (Set Designer), Mr. Gary Moore (Stage Crew Supervisor), Mr. Thomas Rowe (Lighting Designer), and Mrs. Joanne Sprague (Costume Designer).
“One of the best things about Chicago is the incredible choreography; it combines the best of 1920’s dance with the unique style of Bob Fosse," Knight said. "The students have thrown themselves wholeheartedly into meeting the challenges the choreography presents.”
