FANWOOD, NJ -- Fanwood business owners met at John Capeci's Edward Jones office on Wednesday, Oct. 30 to receive an update of happenings from the Fanwood Economic Development Director, Liz Jeffery, and to share ideas for upcoming events.

Promoting Best Small Town Distinction
Sheelan's Crossing owner Sean Flannery suggested that Fanwood could better market its designation as Best Small Town in New Jersey from New Jersey Monthly magazine. All agreed that this is a prime opportunity to promote Fanwood, and that the Borough should maximize this distinction by creating a logo that could be easily used by all on business promotion materials, correspondence, etc. Additionally, a suggestion was also made to possibly have a banner made for across Martine Ave. and also one for the train station where it would be seen by the thousands of NJ Transit riders daily.

Small Business Saturday
This year, November 30 will be Small Business Saturday. The borough has registered to receive marketing materials and is already promoting to encourage the community to shop local.

"This is a great opportunity to promote every business," Jeffery said. "ALL are encouraged to participate by promoting, having a store event or specials that day."

New and Noteworthy

  • Sheelan's Crossing will host its Anniversary Party on Saturday, Nov. 2
  • Fanwood Larder ("The Closer Grocer") is scheduled to open in early November. Fanwood native Eva Pfaff has been working on this specialty grocery store for over two years and is thrilled to bring this new business to downtown (44 South Martine Ave.).

2020 Events
Fanwood will continue to work to improve its annual events. Jeffery indicated that the Borough is exploring event oversight services because it is difficult to run these events successfully solely with volunteers, as has been done up until this point. For instance, Mindy Scarlett, who ran the Ladies Night Out event each June since the event's inception, is no longer able to coordinate it. Jeffery will report back on to the group on the possibility of the borough's engagement of a person to handle support for Fanny Wood Day, the Fanwood 5K, and other events.

The Fanwood Business Roundtables are held bi-monthly (every 2 months). The next round table will be Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 6:00 p.m. at Railside Cafe (250 South Ave., Fanwood). is Scotch Plains-Fanwood’s only free daily local news source.
