FANWOOD, NJ – On Wednesday, Sept. 23, Mayor Colleen Mahr will join Sid Blanchard, executive director of Community Access Unlimited (CAU), at the grand opening of the new mixed-use property on Terrill Road.
The three-story, 12-unit facility will feature 10 housing units with two commercial spaces on the first floor. A portion of the residential units are reserved for low-income individuals with disabilities. CAU has erected residential buildings throughout Union County including mixed-use facilities in Elizabeth and Roselle.
While CAU has yet to confirm occupants for the commercial units in Fanwood, educational and handicapped services commonly occupy similar spaces in CAU facilities in Union County.
“In the other Community Access Unlimited commercial spaces we have classrooms, the Academy for Continuing Education – which offers college courses for people with disabilities, our Personal Preference Program office, and a physical intermediary,” said Cara Pavia of CAU.
As for now, the commercial spaces remain open to prospective renters. CAU has confirmed that three of the residential units have been secured by future tenants, including the first-floor units designated for individuals with developmental disabilities.
Community Access Unlimited (CAU), celebrating its 36th year of success in 2015, supports people with special needs in achieving real lives in the community. The organization provides support and gives a voice to adults and youth who traditionally have little support and no voice in society. It helps people with housing, life skills, employment, money management, socialization and civic activities. Serving more than 5,000 individuals each year, the group also supports opportunities for advocacy through training in assertiveness, decision-making and civil rights.
