SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- Silbert Realty, which is in charge of renting out the QuickChek building on Westfield Ave. in Scotch Plains, has posted a large sign outside the convenience store announcing that the location is available for sale or lease.
Employees, who did not want to provide names to TAPintoSPF, were informed last week that the store will eventually close but no timetable was provided. The employees did not believe that the end was coming soon. One cashier said she was unaware of the closure discussion and had not yet noticed the sign on the corner of Westfield Ave. and Forest Road.
According to one of the workers, the lease runs through October 2020. A call to Silbert Realty to try to confirm the lease terms has not been returned.
QuickChek, which opened its first store in Dunellen in 1967, is in a competition with rival Wawa in the "super premium convenience store" category in New Jersey. Both companies have been expanding their presence across the Garden State with convenience store/gas station combos. According to an NJ.com story, QuickChek has 142 locations in New Jersey, while Wawa had plans to open 60 stores across New Jersey in 2019. Wawa recently opened a location on Route 22 in North Plainfield and has gotten approval to build a convenience store/gas station in Plainfield on South Ave.
