FANWOOD, NJ -- And the winner is... Fanwood in a landslide!
In weekly voting that took place since Aug. 27, Fanwood is the winner of New Jersey Monthly’s 2019 Small Town Showdown, a bracket-style elimination competition, sponsored by SoJo Spa Club, pitted 16 towns against each other.
"A big and loud 'Thank you!' to all the Fanwood fans out there who voted to help us win the New Jersey Monthly magazine Small Town Showdown," a clearly elated Mayor Colleen Mahr told TAPintoSPF. "Most importantly, thanks to all who have invested in Fanwood; the residents who commit to setting roots here, the business owners who take a chance on us, and especially to all the volunteers who invest their time in working for the entire community."
"In Fanwood, we value our past while always looking to the future for ways to keep what has always defined us: a small town with a big heart, fresh and current. That love of our small town shined through during these last few weeks during this friendly state-wide competition," Mayor Mahr added. "I am proud to be your mayor and can think of no better a community to serve. Together we have done so many great things."
In the recent past, the borough has received accolades for its smart growth and was featured in a New York Times real estate section article about its development as a transit village. With the recent completion of Station Square, Fanwood saw what was once an underused piece of property become transformed into an attractive mixed-use development.
"Congratulations to Mayor Mahr and the Fanwood leaders and community. This recognition is so well-deserved," said Liz Jeffrey, the borough's downtown redevelopment director. "Fanwood is a fantastic town that has maintained its neighborly charm while surging forth into a vibrant, destination town with new investment, businesses and families. It takes great vision and tireless commitment.”
Fanwood recently appeared in NJ Monthly's September issue as one of the magazine's 16 favorite small towns.
"Thank you to New Jersey Monthly for including Fanwood on your initial list of "16 Small Towns We Love." While those of us here in Fanwood have always known what a special place it is, it's now clear the rest of New Jersey knows too!"
