SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- When Filomena Fernicola was born on April, 19, 1919, World War I was being fought in Europe, President Woodrow Wilson was in the White House, Charlie Chaplin was the world's biggest film star, and Prohibition was ratified.
Born and raised in Newark, "Aunt Fil" is a first generation Italian-American whose parents were born in Italy. In 2005, she moved to Scotch Plains, where she lives with her daughter, Sharon. Aunt Fil has almost as many nieces and nephews (100) as she has candles on her birthday cake!
The centenarian exercises daily, loves hot dogs, and has a great sense of humor. Normally, one would have a big family celebration to mark such a significant birthday, but coronavirus restrictions preclude such events.
