HILLSBOROUGH, NJ -- The Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School Raiders Marching Band claimed 2nd place with a score of 87.370 in their division and earned a Caption Award for Best Visual in Hillsborough at the rescheduled USBands NJ State Championship competition on Wednesday evening .
The band was also presented with The Cadets Award of Excellence, which recognizes performances reflecting overall effect, creativity, and pursuit of excellence. The trophy for The Cadets Award of Excellence is a shako inscribed with a customized plaque reflecting the winning band’s name, performance date and location, along with the name of the championship at which it was presented.
The Raiders Marching Band is under the direction of Durand Thomas, along with Assistant Director John Gillick and Color Guard Director Jackie Tumolo. Student Drum Majors are Joe Elkin, Emelyne Johns, and Emma O’Brien. The band's 2019 show is titled Bocetos de España (”Sketches of Spain”).
The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Music Boosters encourage everyone to cheer for the band's final 2019 competition performance at the National Championship in Allentown, PA, on Saturday, Nov. 2.
