SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- St. Bartholomew Academy welcomed over 200 students from Pre-K3 through 8th grade on Wednesday, Sept. 4. This school year is one of celebration for the Academy as it has been a fixture of Catholic education in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood area for 70 years. Year-long service projects and events are in the works to mark this milestone.

Students were excited to return to school and see the many changes that awaited them, including several new members of faculty and staff. Demonstrating the Academy’s ongoing commitment to its year-long art and music classes, the school welcomed two new teachers to the faculty. Ms. Emily Recupero, the new art teacher, hails from Cranford and has been inspiring young artists for over five years. Ms. Virgina Blacker, the new music teacher, brings over 20 years of music education and has performed at Carnegie Hall. “Art and music are vital to a young person’s education. Both enable students to connect more deeply to the world around them and give them a new way of seeing things," said Sr. Elizabeth Calello, MPF., Principal.

The Academy also welcomed two other new faculty members. The new STEM teacher, Ms.Teresa Booner, will use her art and design background to motivate the students to look at problems creatively. Mr. John Benvenuto has joined the faculty as the 4th grade homeroom teacher and 4th and 5th grade math and science teacher. He has over 10 years of classroom experience and brings with him a desire to instill students with a love of learning, self-discipline, and respect for themselves and others.

“This is an exciting year for us,” said Sr. Elizabeth. “We are thrilled to be able to celebrate our 70th anniversary. With so many Catholic schools closing these past few years, it is important to recognize the schools that are thriving, and we are one of them. I am so proud of the work of our faculty and staff as they provide a future-ready education for our students in a loving, faith-filled environment. We are looking forward to being here another 70 years.”
