NEW JERSEY -- Who knew?

According to study commissioned by SafeHome, New Jersey is the most intelligent state in the union, rating smarter than Massachusetts and other states acclaimed for their school systems. The rankings considered the percentage of residents who hold bachelor’s degrees and graduate degrees, SAT scores, and high school graduation rates, among other criteria. New Jersey ranked first in high school graduation rate (91%) and second in percentage of bachelor's degrees in the state (24.2%).

Here are the Top 10 Smartest States, according to the SafeHome rankings:

  • Public high school graduation rate (2016-17): 91%, No. 1 in U.S.
  • Median SAT score (2018-19): 1,090, No. 28 in U.S.
  • Average composite ACT score (2017-18): 23.7, No. 13 in U.S.
