SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- U.S. News & World Report has come out with its 2021 Best High Schools of nearly 24,000 public high schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, which has a total enrollment of 1,559 students and 114 full-time teachers, is ranked 62nd within New Jersey. The Advanced Placement (AP®) participation rate is 56%. The total minority enrollment is 30%, and 6% of students are economically disadvantaged.

The Union County Magnet High School at the Union County VoTech campus on Raritan Road rated No. 6 in New Jersey and No. 83 in the country.

  • Academy of Information Technology (AIT): 9th in NJ, 123rd in the U.S.
  • Academy for Allied Heath Sciences: 10th in NJ, 158th in the U.S.
  • Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School: 62nd in NJ and 1,444th in the U.S.
  • Union County Tech: 181st in NJ, 5,093rd in the U.S.
  • Academy of Performing Arts (APA): 208th in NJ and 5,862nd in the U.S. 

The VoTech schools have a 100% graduation rate, while SPFHS graduates 97% of its students.

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Virginia is No. 1 in the national ranking of Best High Schools, as well as among magnet schools. BASIS Chandler in Arizona is at the top of the list for charter schools, and High Technology High School in New Jersey is the No. 1 STEM school.

Nearly 18,000 schools were ranked on six factors: College Readiness 30%, Math and Reading Proficiency 20%, Math and Reading Performance 20%, Underserved Student Performance 10%, College Curriculum Breadth 10%, and Graduation Rate 10%.
