SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Mayor Al Smith kicked off his reelection campaign fundraising efforts in Scotch Plains with an 'Almost Fourth of July' barbeque fundraiser hosted by Paulette and Andy Coronato.

Mayor Smith won election in November 2016 and will run again with Councilman Ted Spera at his side in 2020. With Democrats now outnumbering Republicans in Scotch Plains, he will have to appeal not only to his base, but also to independent voters and Democrats willing to cross party lines.

"I've tried to do things in a bipartisan way since taking over as mayor," Smith told the crowd. "It's the way to get things done at this level of government. There's a lot more that I want to do, particularly with regards to downtown development."
