FANWOOD, NJ -- In an online version of a Wall Street Journal story that will appear in print on Wednesday, reporter Kate King examined the rise of women in New Jersey politics and highlighted Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr's campaign for Union County Democratic Committee (UCDC) chair. against two male candidates.

To get more women elected to state government, they need to tackle a political-party structure that wields power in selecting and promoting candidates - Kate King, Wall St. Journal

Mahr, in an exclusive interview with TAPinto.net, said that she is humbled by inclusion in a national story about how women are bucking the status quo in Garden State politics.

"To be identified as someone changing face of NJ politics where women are standing up to be included in all level of politics... it's breathtaking to me," Mayor Mahr said. "This is a reflection of what's going on nationally, and it's humbling to be included in a story that recognizes the importance of women holding positions of political power."

Mahr is in a battle with State Senator Nick Scutari of Linden and Anthony Salters in Hillside for the position of Union County Democratic Committee chair. The position became available following the resignation of Jerry Green, who cited illness as the reason he is stepping down. The three candidates each spoke to a gathering of voters in Green's hometown at the Plainfield Democratic City Committee Meeting last Saturday. The ballot will be decided by more than 800 elected committee members.

"To be considered one of the leaders changing New Jersey politics from my role as the Mayor of Fanwood and running for chair of the Union County Democratic party, this is a moment that I will never forget," Mahr added.

The Fanwood mayor says that in the short period of time since she declared her candidacy, the outpouring of support from engaged residents of Union County has been "completely overwhelming."

"I know I'm on the right path and I'm doing what I should be doing at this particular time by the amount of people who I don't know but have reached our to ask how they can help me," Mahr explained. "This reinvigorates me; I will go into the convention feeling an incredible amount of support. This is an exciting time in the Democratic process."

The Missing Moses

A seemingly dubious distinction belongs to this week’s Parshah, Tetzaveh (Exodus 27:20–30:10). It is the only reading in the Torah — from the first Parshah of the book of Exodus (in which he is born) until the end of the book of Numbers — where the name of Moses is not mentioned. Tetzaveh’s opening words are V’atah ...
