SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- Foodies and friends of Scotch Plains resident Chef Joe Murphy who tuned in to watch him compete on the Food Network's “Chopped Sweets” on Monday, Feb. 24 were not disappointed. The corporate pastry chef for the Jean-Georges Vongerichten's famed Jean-Georges Restaurant Group was the winner of the dessert-making program hosted by Scott Conant.
Murphy competed against pastry chefs Claudia Igwe from Crofton, Maryland, William Ackeney of Tiny Pies in Austin, Texas, and 26-year-old Claudia Martinez, who is a pastry chef at three restaurants. Murphy, a three Michelin star pastry chef for several restaurants in New York City, took home a $10,000 prize for his three creations:
- Dark Chocolate Ganache with Spicy Current Jam (utilizing spicy fish spread, mini chocolate champagne bottles, currants, and avocado white chocolate bars),
- Passion Fruit "Golden Milk" Sorbet with Sweet & Sour Pineapple, Micro-Basil and Cotton Candy (using passion fruit, jelly beans, "golden milk powder," and mini wedding cakes),
- Profiterole (cream puff) with Sugared Quail Egg and Chocolate Pudding (incorporating mini ice cream cones, canned quail eggs, elderberries, and carbonated candy).
"Being a Chopped Sweets champion is incredible. My kids wanted me to compete and when they see that I'm the winner, they are going to be so excited," Murphy said at the conclusion of the show. "I can't believe I won."
