Today, meet Shayna Gehl, one of the energizing group exercise instructors who discovered her love of group fitness after becoming a member of the YMCA.
I have been a member of the Y for about two years and have been working here as an instructor for about a year. I first taught Cycle and now I teach, Cycle, BOSU and HIIT and I sub TRX. I joined the Y after moving to New Jersey and got into fitness classes. I was active before that but I didn’t take group exercise classes before. I started taking BOSU classes and HIIT and Cycle and was like, how did I make it to this point in life and not know how great group exercise is?"
You don’t need to do anything but show up and they take you through an intense workout. I loved how these classes made me feel and I decided to become a group exercise instructor. I really believe in what group fitness provides people.
I feel amazing every time I leave a class. Plus, the Y has other benefits aside from group fitness. There are activities for my kids and there’s Child Watch for when parents work out. At the Y, you also get a sense of community. Real people come to the Y. You can come in and just sit in the café with other members. There is something for everyone. I also like that the Y is a nonprofit. People come here looking for community and want to contribute to a good cause.
